ROMAIN VIRGO RANKED IN ALASKA'S TOP 30

Reggae singer Romain Virgo has continued to increase his fan base in countries as far away as Alaska.

The programme, 'Vibes of the Time' on Anchorage, Alaska's KRUA 88.1 FM, compiled a list of their Top 30 reggae tracks for 2010 and Romain's Murderer holds the number 17 position.

Also among the top 30 are Beres Hammond, Jah Cure, Queen Ifrica, Busy Signal and Tarrus Riley. The list, however, is dominated by overseas reggae acts such as Sylvanus, Kalli Blaxx, Fire Star, Dub Matix feat. Kulcha Ites and others.

Romain says, "It was surprising to know how far up north my music is being accepted; somewhere like Alaska that many of us don't even think about. It's a great feeling though. Fi real, it is."

Also hitting the international charts is his single, Dark Skin Girl, which sits at the number 8 spot on the Mediaguide Reggae Chart after jumping from the number 31 position last week. The single was ranked after compiling the total plays for the week on radio stations, including KABF 88.3 in Little Rock, Arkansas, KAZI 88.7 in Austin, Texas, KCS8 91.9 in Santa Barbara, California, KLSU 91.1 in Baton Rouge, Los Angeles, UJFM 95.4 in Johannesburg, South Africa, WQHT 97.1 in New York and others. Additional artistes also in the top 10 on the Mediaguide chart are Jah Cure, Nas and Damian 'Junior Gong' Marley, Ricky Blaze, Serani and Gyptian, with Hold Yuh enjoying the number one spot.

SOPHIA BROWN AIMS AT BIG 2011

Sophia Brown recently returned from a successful promotional tour of the United States where she continued to make inroads into the market there pushing her Spotlight album and laying the groundwork for an album to be released by April or May this year.

She also managed to get a lot more done. "I shot a video for the title track of the (new) album, Catch Me If You Can. I finally decided I wanted to name the album that and secondly - it wasn't a part of the plan - but we shot a video for Let It Be Me, a song that is getting heavy rotation on all the pop stations in America," she revealed.

She said the decision to do a video for Let It Be Me came after she and her management realised how well the song was doing in the United States. The song was getting played on Kiss FM, MTV Radio, BET radio, and several other major stations across the globe.

Big success

"I think it's a big success for me as a female who is pushing my own thing out there. I am truly happy for that," she said.

"It makes me feel proud how 2010 is ending," she had said recently.

"It's a nice way to end the year, considering that I am coming out with an album next (this) year."

For the reggae songstress, 2010 was a good year indeed. Several of her songs made it on to the Canadian charts as well as reggae charts in the United States. Let It Be Me, perhaps her most successful song for the year went to number one in Canada and made it on to the top 20 on the reggae charts in New York. The song has also got more than 175 spins on radio stations all across the United States on mainstream radio from Texas to New York.

Based partially on the success of Let It Be Me, on the album that she plans to release, Brown wants to do more songs with pop beats because she recognises that there is a trend developing that she can capitalise on.

"On the album we're going to be having plenty pop-reggae songs. I have been asking people who make beats for me to give me some of those pop rhythms and Cashflow (Productions) could accommodate me with some of them," she said.

"The title track Catch Me if You Can is for a different kind of market but can be rotated on the same stations as well because it's kind of different."

Embracing change

The choice of rhythm was not the only change Brown has come to embrace, opting for a different feel and look to her Catch Me If You Can music video as well. "The video was shot by Jeff Dean. I decided to go with someone else other than Kai Morrison for that video, based upon the fact that I wanted something different, which I have got on that video, which is fantastic. He has shot videos for Snoop Dogg, Beyoncé and other major stars and I was looking for something with that top-quality element," she said.

The videos are to be released early this year.

Brown, who was among 13 female performers on Sting this year, has also added an attorney and industry experts including a booking agent to her team. They will position her to capitalise on the momentum which has been boosted by word from Universal Records that they have been getting a lot of positive feedback on her music.

All these factors, when combined, create the perfect environment for her to be touring this year.

"That is what I am really setting up myself for. I didn't do much touring with the other album, The Spotlight, and so now I am going have two albums to promote."
